Manufacturing Technology Consumption Up 188% In January Mar 16, 2011

January 2011 U.S. manufacturing technology consumption was $371.41 million, according to AMTDA, the American Machine Tool Distributors’ Association and AMT - The Association For Manufacturing Technology. This total, as reported by companies participating in the USMTC program, was down 16.3% from December but up 188.3% compared to $128.82 million in January 2010.

"Despite the slight decline in orders from December, the January USMTC report confirms that U.S. manufacturers are reinvesting vigorously to improve productivity,” said Peter Borden, AMTDA President. “As equipment deliveries grow longer and commodity prices increase, factories may continue to make these investments before inflation and other factors raise prices further."

The United States Manufacturing Technology Consumption (USMTC) report provides regional and national U.S. consumption data of domestic and imported machine tools and related equipment. The associations say analysis of manufacturing technology consumption provides a reliable leading economic indicator as manufacturing industries invest in capital metalworking equipment to increase capacity and improve productivity.
