AHAM Testifies Before House Subcommittee On CPSC Database

AHAM Vice President Wayne Morris today testified before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Manufacturing and Trade to recommend improvements to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database, which was authorized under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).

Morris and other panelists asked the Subcommittee to consider a number of important changes to the statute to improve the accuracy and usefulness of the information supplied to the public through the database.

These included:
• Information should not be added to the public database while there is a pending claim of material inaccuracy.
• Eligible reporters to the database should be limited to those with first-hand information about the harm or with a relationship to the consumer - which, AHAM pointed out, was Congress's intent.
• Registration of model or other descriptor information should be required where available. AHAM acknowledged that such information would be difficult to determine for some consumer products (such as rubber balls). "The fact that such a requirement cannot always be adhered to is no reason not to apply it as much as possible," Morris told the subcommittee.

AHAM has worked with the CPSC in a number of areas and supported passage of the CPSIA and greater funding for the CPSC.

As it now stands, the Publicly Available Consumer Product Safety Information Database (SaferProducts.gov) will launch in March 2011 and allow any member of the public to submit reports of harm involving consumer products. Manufacturers (including importers) and private labelers identified in reports will be provided a limited opportunity to comment on the reports. All reports will be published online and available for anyone to search.
