Appliance and consumer electronics maker Sharp Corp. established a new research and development center in Shanghai, charged with R&D of technologies related to the environment, energy, electronic telecommunications, and materials.
Sharp already has an Advanced R&D Center at its Chinese sales subsidiary, but that center is focused primarily on software development.
Sharp Laboratories of China Co., ltd. (SLC), will begin operations in the spring of 2011 will be a part of Sharp network of four R&D bases. The others are in Japan, the United States, and the UK.
Sharp intends to put in place an integrated Chinese of local production for local consumption in China that handles all operations from crucial R&D to product planning, as well as production through sales and marketing.
The lab will be capitalized at $1.4 million and will have about 65 employees.
