The third quarter of 2010 showed the first contraction in the small motor market since it hit bottom during the recession, according to the latest edition of the IMS Research Small Motor Market Tracker.
The small motor market hit bottom in the second quarter of 2009 and has been in recovery, and growing each quarter, ever since. The research firm characterized the recovery as quite robust at times, achieving double digit quarter-on-quarter growth of just over 11% in the second quarter of 2010.
While 3Q 2010 showed a quarter-on-quarter contraction of 2%, the 2010 U.S. small motors market still appears to be on-track to surpass its peak 2008 of $821
million.
The quarterly Americas Small Motor Tracker comes about as a partnership between the market research firm and SMMA - The Motor & Motion Association, covering motors up to maximum power rating of 500W and in the following configurations:
• tin can
• hybrid stepper
• brushed DC (IP40+)
• brushless DC (IP40+)
• coreless motors
