Appliance Manufacturing Sector Grows in December

The U.S. Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components industry segment reported growth in December 2010, according to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. ISM said economic activity in the manufacturing sector overall expanded for the 17th consecutive month and the overall economy grew for the 20th consecutive month. The ISM PMI Index stood at 57% for December.

NEW ORDERS. The Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components sector was among the 10 industry sectors reporting December growth in new orders.

PRODUCTION. The Appliance sector was among the six industry sectors that reported a December decrease in production.

EMPLOYMENT. The Appliance sector was among the nine industry sectors that reported December growth in employment.

SUPPLIER DELIVERIES. The Appliance sector was among the eight industry sectors that reported slower supplier deliveries in December.

INVENTORIES. The Appliance sector reported that inventories remained the same in December.

CUSTOMERS' INVENTORIES. The Appliance sector was among the 11 industries reporting customers' inventories as being too low during December.

PRICES. The Appliance sector was among the 18 industries reporting paying increased prices during the month of December.

BACKLOG OF ORDERS. The Appliance sector was among the six industries reporting increased order backlogs in December.

NEW EXPORT ORDERS. The Appliance sector was among the eight industries reporting growth in new export orders in December.

IMPORTS. The Appliance sector was among the six industries reporting growth in imports during the month of December.

Norbert J. Ore, CPSM, C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said the report indicates that the manufacturing sector continued its growth trend in December. "We saw significant recovery for much of the U.S. manufacturing sector in 2010," he said, but added that the recovery centered on strength in autos, metals, food, machinery, computers, and electronics, "Those industries tied primarily to housing continue to struggle."

Of the 18 manufacturing industries tracked by ISM, 11 reported growth in December, in the following order:
• apparel, leather & allied products
• primary metals
• fabricated metal products
• machinery
• computer & electronic products
• food, beverage & tobacco products
• textile mills
• plastics & rubber products
• transportation equipment
• electrical equipment, appliances & components
• chemical products

The four industries reporting contraction in December were:
• nonmetallic mineral products
• paper products
• printing & related support activities
• miscellaneous manufacturing
