Hitachi will bring India's first window air-conditioner with a five-star energy efficiency rating to market in January 2011, according to a report in The Economic Times. The unit from Hitachi Home & Life Solutions (India) Ltd. (HHLI) will have a retail price of Rs 25,000 (approx. US$555). HHLI reportedly said the unit earned a five-star energy efficiency rating from India's Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), making it the first window air-conditioner to earn the rating.
The Economic Times report estimated the Indian market for air-conditioners at 3 million units per year, and said about 65% of those units are split systems and the remainder window-type.
