World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 114 million metric tons (mmt) in November 2010, up 5.1% from November 2009. World crude steel production for the first 11 months of 2010 was 1,281 mmt, 16.2% higher than the same period in 2009.
November 2010 crude steel production by nation:
• China's production was 50.2 mmt, up 4.8% from November 2009.
• Japan produced 9.0 mmt of crude steel, 1.4% higher than November 2009.
• South Korea produced 5.2 mmt, up 16.4%.
• Germany produced 3.8 mmt, up 8.0%.
• Italy produced 2.3 mmt, up 19.3%.
• Spain produced 1.2 mmt, down 19.8% compared to November 2009.
• Turkey produced 2.5 mmt, up 15.7%.
• The United States produced 6.5 mmt, up 13.0%.
• Brazil produced 2.6 mmt, a decrease of 2.8% decrease from November 2009.
The World Steel Association said world crude steel production in November 2010 was 31.9% higher than in November 2008, a time when the impact of the global economic crisis on world crude steel production became apparent. Crude steel production for the first 11 months of 2010 was 1,281 mmt, 4.6% higher than in 2008.
Crude steel production for the year-to-date in the EU was still down 15.3% for the first 11 months of 2010 compared to 2008. Crude steel production for the year-to-date in the United States was down 14.1% for the first 11 months of 2010 compared to 2008. Asia's crude steel production was 16.4% higher year-to-date.
The association said the crude steel capacity utilization ratio of the 66 countries in November 2010 was at 75.2%, compared to 75.3% in October 2010. Compared to November 2009, the utilization ratio in November slipped 0.8%.
