Canadian Ductless Split Shipments Show Highest 3Q Increases

Canadian ductless splits system shipments showed the highest product sector gain in the third quarter of 2010, increasing by 291%m, according to the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI).

HRAI shipments:

• Commercial air-conditioning shipments increased 16%, from 9,644 in the third quarter of 2009 to 11,216 in the third quarter of 2010. Year-to-date shipments increased 11%, from 24,877 3Q 2009 to 27,607 in 3Q 2010.
• Residential air-conditioning shipments increased 7% from 52,579 in 3Q 2009 to 56,573 in 3Q 2010. Year-to-date shipments increased 24% from 160,717 for 3Q 2009 to 200,151 for 3Q 2010.
• Residential furnace shipments decreased 17%, from 101,098 in 3Q 2009 to 83,569 in 3Q 2010. Year-to-date shipments increased, 6% from 210,716 for 3Q 2009 to 223,549 for 3Q 2010.
• Unit heater shipments increased by 2%, from 11,312 in 3Q 2009 to 11,513 in 3Q 2010. Year-to-date shipments increased 15%, from 24,439 for 3Q 2009 to 28,032 for 3Q 2010.
• Ductless split systems shipments increased by 291% from 5,353 in the third quarter of 2009 to 20,972 in the third quarter of 2010. Revised year-to-date shipments increased 101% from 31,050 for 3Q 2009 to 62,576 for 3Q 2010.
• Chiller bookings increased 72% from 146 in the third quarter of 2009 to 252 in 3Q 2010. Year-to-date shipments increased 49%, from 504 for 3Q 2009 to 751 for 3Q 2010.

HRAI definitions:
• residential air-conditioning - ducted split system air-conditioning and heat pumps up to 5 tons
• ductless splits - heat pumps and conditioning condensing units (cooling only)
• commercial air-conditioning - rooftops (combination heat/cool), packaged cooling, and packaged heat pumps
• furnace - residential forced air furnaces of all types (gas, oil, electric, and combination)
• chillers - includes large tonnage liquid, reciprocating liquid, and absorption chillers
• unit heater - self-contained, automatically controlled vented units limited to heating of non-residential space and also includes duct furnaces
