Electrolux is planning to consolidate its North American cooking manufacturing in a new, $190 million facility, to be constructed in Memphis, TN.
The announcement of the new facility came just hours after Electrolux said it would close its cooking appliances plant in l'Assomption, Quebec, Canada, in 2013.
Electrolux currently has a cooking plant in Springfield, TN, about 250 miles from Memphis. The company said consolidating cooking production in Tennessee would allow it to gain advantages of scale by leveraging resources such as R&D, talent, labs, and its supply base.
Electrolux said it investigated a number of potential locations in the United States and Mexico for the new cooking facility. The Memphis site, the company said, offers an optimal geographical location for customers and suppliers.
Production is expected to start in mid-2012 and the Memphis plant is expected to be fully operational in 2013.
The new plant will receive investment support from state, county, and city governing bodies.
