Sharp Begins Mass Production of New Single Crystalline Solar Cells Dec 2, 2010

Sharp Corp. has developed a new single crystalline solar cell technology, with a high conversion efficiency, for residential as well as commercial applications. Sharp will begin mass producing this solar cell at its solar cell plant in Green Front Sakai, in Sakai City, Japan. The plant is expected to have an annual production capacity of 200 MW within fiscal year 2010 and will produce everything from solar cells to solar modules.

THE TECHNOLOGY

This single crystalline solar cell with high conversion efficiency uses a Back Contact structure, in which electrodes are connected on the back side. This eliminates the need for electrodes to be set on the front-side. The new structure increases the light-receiving area on the front-side surface.

In addition, Sharp developed a new alignment technology, called an Alignment Sheet system, reducing the connection resistance between adjacent cells.
