Appliance Manufacturing Sector Grows in Nov.

The U.S. Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components industry segment reported growth in November 2010, according to the latest Manufacturing ISM Report On Business. ISM said economic activity in the manufacturing sector overall expanded for the 16th consecutive month and the overall economy grew for the 19th consecutive month.

NEW ORDERS. The Electrical Equipment, Appliances & Components sector was also among the nine industry sectors reporting November growth in new orders.

PRODUCTION. The Appliance sector was among the six industry sectors that reported November growth in production.

EMPLOYMENT. The Appliance sector was among the 11 industry sectors that reported November growth in employment.

SUPPLIER DELIVERIES. The Appliance sector was among the 11 industry sectors that reported slower supplier deliveries in November.

INVENTORIES. The Appliance sector was among the among the three industry sectors that reported decreases in inventories in November.

CUSTOMERS' INVENTORIES. The Appliance sector was among the seven industries reporting customers' inventories as being too low during November.

PRICES. The Appliance sector was among the 14 industries reporting paying increased prices during the month of November.

BACKLOG OF ORDERS. The Appliance sector was among the four industries reporting increased order backlogs in November.

NEW EXPORT ORDERS. The Appliance sector was among the nine industries reporting growth in new export orders in November.

IMPORTS. The Appliance sector was among the six industries reporting growth in imports during the month of November.


"The manufacturing sector grew during November, with both new orders and production continuing to expand," said Norbert J. Ore, CPSM, C.P.M., chair of the Institute for Supply Management Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "With the PMI at 56.6%, November's rate of growth is the second fastest in the last six months.

Of the 18 manufacturing sectors tracked by ISM, 10 reported growth in November in the following order:
• computer & electronic products
• petroleum & coal products
• apparel, leather & allied products
• machinery
• fabricated metal products
• plastics & rubber products
• transportation equipment
• electrical equipment, appliances & components
• chemical products
• primary metals

"Exports and imports continue to support expansion in the sector," Ore said. "Prices moderated slightly during the month, but comments from the respondents express concerns with regard to pricing pressures. The list of commodities in short supply increased, though short supply items are not yet posing significant problems. Manufacturing continues to benefit from the recovery in autos, but those industries reliant upon housing continue to struggle."

The six industries reporting contraction in November, in order, are:
• printing & related support activities
• furniture & related products
• food, beverage & tobacco products
• nonmetallic mineral products
• paper products
• miscellaneous manufacturing
