Small kitchen appliance sales in the United States last holiday season were pushed along by more eat-at-home consumer behavior and significant retail discounting.

"This year, with the many Black Friday promotions that came out as early as September, it will be interesting to see the consumer response over the next several weeks,” said Debra Mednick, executive director, The NPD Group’s small appliances division.

According to The NPD Group Point-of-Sale Leader Panel, the top five small kitchen appliances categories sold in the United States during the week of Black Friday 2009, based on unit sales were:
• slow cookers
• drip coffeemakers
• electric griddles
• toasters
• electric grills

Other observations from NPD:

4Q 2009 SALES: Overall, single-serve coffee makers, waffle irons, stand mixers, electric skillets, and electric grills/griddles were the most gifted small kitchen appliance items sold in the fourth quarter of 2009.

NORTHEASTERS GIFTED APPLIANCES THE MOST: Consumers in the Northeast United States, who generally weathered the economic downturn better than those in other regions, have a higher tendency to give small kitchen appliances as gifts.
