The U.S. Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) enables low-income families to permanently reduce energy bills by making their homes more energy efficient, and WAP providers across the United States organized a Weatherization Day on Oct. 30, 2010, to call attention to their services.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) says program funds are used to improve the energy performance of dwellings of needy families using the most advanced technologies and testing protocols available in the housing industry. DOE provides funding to states, U.S. overseas territories, and Indian tribal governments. These governments, in turn, fund a network of local community action agencies, nonprofit organizations, and local governments that provide the weatherization services.

GE Appliances & Lighting has said that its GeoSpring hybrid water heater has piqued the interest of state weatherization programs. The appliance uses a combination of heat pump technology and traditional electric elements to heat water. Installing the hybrid water heater can reduce water heating operating costs up to 62%, for energy cost savings of up to $320 annually.

“According to the DOE, weatherization recipients see their annual energy bill reduced by $437, depending on fuel type," noted Sierra Ashley, market development manager for GE Appliances. By adding the hybrid water heater to the program, she added, these savings could double.

GE is already involved with WAP in Kentucky, New York, Virginia, Texas, Utah, North Carolina, and other states.
