Miele Launches Commercial Heat-Pump Dryers That Could Save 60% Energy

At today's opening of the Expo Detergo International 2010 trade show in Milan, appliance maker Miele unveiled its first commercial-grade heat-pump dryers. The dryers reduce electricity consumption by 60% and don't require vent ducting.

Expo Detergo Runs from October 15-18, 2010, at the Fiera Milano expo center in Milan, Italy.

Miele described commercial dryers as generally power-hungry machines, consuming a lot of electricity to dry garments in the laundries of hotels, care centers, and small businesses. Heat-pump dryers feature a closed circuit: hot, moisture-laden air from the dryer is fed through a heat pump where is it cooled and dehumidified through condensation in a heat exchanger. The air then proceeds through a second heat exchanger, where it is heated again before its passage through the drum. The closed air circuit obviates the need for vent ducting, which can reduce the expense of installation. Wall vents can be avoided, which can be an important aspect in low-energy housing. With a rated load far below that of a comparable conventional electrically heated dryer, the heat-pump dryer lends itself to buildings with low supply ratings or where peak loads must be avoided using peak-load negotiation systems.

Cooling and dehumidifying air releases energy that is captured and used to pre-heat cold, dry air. This approach retains the latent heat within the process, unlike vented and traditional condenser dryers. The temperature of the process air can be kept at very low levels thanks to thorough dehumidification.

The dryers will go on sale in early 2011 in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland, with other countries to follow later.

The dryers come in two models:
• PT 8257 has a drum volume of 250 liters and a load capacity of between 10 and 13 kg of laundry.
• PT 8337 WP, at 325 liters capacity, can handle loads of 13 to 16 kg.

Both models are engineered to provide short cycle times, capable of drying a 10 kg load in 39 minutes.
