Appliance industry supplier The Dow Chemical Company received a 2010 Significant Achievement award during the 11th Annual Out & Equal Workplace Awards. The award recognizes Dow's efforts to support a diverse and inclusive workplace, as well as for the efforts of its Gays, Lesbians and Allies at Dow (GLAD) Network. An award ceremony was held Oct. 7, 2010.
Dow supplies plastic resins, plastic additives, coatings, and numerous other materials used in the manufacture and packaging of appliances.
Out & Equal is a national U.S. nonprofit organization that champions safe and equitable workplaces for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people.
Howard Ungerleider, vice president of Dow investor relations and the company’s GLAD executive sponsor, accepted the award on behalf of Dow. He called it a pivotal moment for the company, saying it reflected nearly a decade of effort and progress for the GLAD network and for Dow. "This not only demonstrates that we foster an accepting and inclusive workplace at Dow, but is also proof loud and clear that our work has not gone unnoticed," he said.
The Significant Achievement Award recognizes an employer who has made significant strides in advancing a fair and equitable workplace for LGBT employees. In recent years, Dow has also received awards from other premiere national and international LGBT organizations, including:
• Human Rights Council (HRC)
• International Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (IGLCC)
• Lambda Legal
• Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
Gregory Freiwald, executive vice president for human resources at Dow, said GLAD's positive influence went well beyond supporting LGBTs. He credited the organization with "helping us to foster a culture that reflects our value of ‘respect for people’ and is characterized by inclusion. As a result, all Dow employees benefit from GLAD's work."
In addition to the company award, Bill Hendrix, a biology team leader with Dow Agrosciences, personally received the 2010 Trailblazer Award, recognizing an LGBT person who made significant contributions to advancing workplace equality by helping improve their own workplace or contributing to equality nationally.
