The 50th IFA trade show broke nearly all its own records when it took place Sept. 3-8, 2010 in Berlin. The event added home appliances to its lineup in 2008, after having been traditionally a consumer electronics event for years.

IFA organizers said key themes in home appliance exhibits included ease-of-use and ergonomics, digital lifestyles, and smart homes.

Energy-efficiency and conservation were key issues for the home appliances exhibitors (as well as consumer electronics exhibitors). Energy efficiency's importance could be seen in many new products as well as numerous special shows and conferences focusing on efficiency. A keynote address by Dr. Kurt-Ludwig Gutberlet, chairman and CEO of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, examined technical advancement in the home appliance industry enables consumers to save an unprecedented amount of energy.

The closing keynote was delivered by Google Chairman and CEO Dr. Eric Schmidt, who looked ahead to the future of communication technology. He predicted the Internet will soon reach 4 billion people – and “not just the elite” - via smartphones.

“That echoed the 1930 keynote by Albert Einstein,” said Jens Heithecker, executive director of IFA. “Einstein was talking about radio, the new technology of the time. He said ‘technology enables communication and communication connects people.’”

IFA 2010 by the numbers:
• 1423 exhibitors from 75 countries, up 22% from 2009
• display space increased 11% to 134,000 sq m
• 235,000 total visitors; overall attendance was up 5% over 2009

• €3.5 billion Euro (approx. US$4.55 billion) in business orders, 9% higher than in 2009
• press attendance was 6084, including 1877 international journalists from 75 countries - up 9%
