Whirlpool Corp. will build a 1 million sq ft manufacturing facility in Cleveland, TN, U.S. to produce built-in, premium cooking appliances.

Whirlpool intends that the new operation will be an energy efficient, LEED-certified facility to replace the existing, 100-year old manufacturing plant located at 740 King Edward Avenue, South East.

A 400,000 sq ft distribution center is also planned.

Whirlpool will invest $120 million in the new facility and expects to add about 130 new jobs to its 1500 Cleveland employees. Construction is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010.

The plant in Cleveland, TN, started life almost a century ago and became the manufacturing hub for Magic Chef cooking appliances. Maytag acquired Magic Chef in 1986 and continued to operate the Cleveland manufacturing campus. Even as the Magic Chef brand name lost much of its post-World War II prominence, the plant continued to produce cooking appliances under several Maytag brand names. More brands were added when Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006.

"We're grateful to our team in Cleveland, as well as the local, state and federal officials, who supported this project to retain and grow jobs in Tennessee," said Al Holaday, vice president manufacturing, operations and quality, Whirlpool North America. "Whirlpool is proud to employ more U.S. manufacturing workers than any appliance maker selling product in the U.S."

Even as it some U.S. manufacturing operations have been shuttered in recent years, Whirlpool has made a number of major investments in U.S. facilities, including:

• An $85 million investment will create a new office campus and renovate some of facilities at Whirlpool Corp. headquarters in Benton Harbor, MI. The project started in July 2010 and is expected to take five years to complete.

• Whirlpool acquired a facility in Ottawa, OH, that belonged to now-bankrupt WC Wood. Whirlpool, re-opened the freezer plant, restoring 190 jobs and bringing the company's total employment in Ohio to approximately 10,000.

• Whirlpool invested $175 million in its laundry facilities in Ohio to produce energy and water efficient laundry appliances.

• Whirlpool made a $20 million investment in its Amana, AI refrigerator plant to improve productivity and efficiency.

• Whirlpool announced a new $40 million, one million square foot regional distribution center in Wilmer, TX, which will be energy efficient, LEED certified, and help drive increased efficiencies for the organization.

"Today's announcement for $120M in Cleveland Tennessee is the largest single investment we've ever made anywhere in the world and reinforces our commitment to the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing," said Whirlpool chairman and CEO Jeff M. Fettig.
