Positive Mood in Industry May Help IFA Break Records Aug 16, 2010

Organizers of home appliance and consumer electronics trade show IFA expect significant growth at this year's event, Sept. 3-8, 2010, with as many exhibitors as in 2009 but double-digit growth in visitors. Messe Berlin said exhibitor space is fully booked.

Hans-Joachim Kamp, vice president of industry association Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie (ZVEI) and a member of the supervisory board of IFA organizer Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik mbH (gfu), the markets are in a positive mood.

"The economic performance figures released by the Ifo index and GfK Konsumklima bode well for IFA," Kamp said. "In the electrical home appliances sector we expect turnover in the market for large-scale appliances to remain stable, at around 7 billion euros, while this year sales of small appliances will reach nearly 3.5 billion euros, an increase of around 2%."

"Following outstanding sales of TV sets (+34 %) during the World Cup, gfu expects turnover in the German consumer electronics market to grow to around 25 billion euros."

Compared with a decade earlier, over the 10-year period between 2000 and 2010 turnover has risen by 25%. During the same period annual household spending on consumer electronics products rose from 501 to 615 euros.
