The latest rankings for the power management & driver IC market from IMS Research showed Texas Instruments increasing its lead in the market during the downturn in 2009, and now holds a share of 10.5%.

Initial findings from the 2010 study showed that TI increased its lead over the other top 10 suppliers in the market, growing its share by 1.1% from 2008 to 2009 even as the market declined by an estimated 14.4%. The research firm estimated TI's 10.5% share of the global power IC market in 2009 was almost 3% more than second-place supplier Infineon Technologies.

Ryan Sanderson, senior analyst in IMS Research’s Power and Energy research group, said the unpredictable and difficult 2009 year in 2009 drove a shift in the top 10 rankings. STMicroelectronics moved ahead of Linear Technology to 5th position, while Rohm and Intersil both pulled in front of ON Semiconductor.

"However, we’re predicting the power IC market will grow around 20-25% in 2010 and it is very likely there will be major changes in the supplier rankings and market shares this year too," Sanderson said.

Market shares by product type also show significant changes from 2008 to 2009, with some suppliers weathering the downturn better than others, depending on their strategy during the downturn/recovery period and the demand from the key end equipment markets and customers they serve.
