Touch screen module revenue will grow from $4.3 billion in 2009 to nearly $14 billion by 2016, at a compound annual growth rate of 18%, according to DisplaySearch. Jennifer Colegrove, the market research firm's director of Display Technologies, said touch screen penetration is growing rapidly in portable devices and in the coming years will begin to see strong growth in large-size applications.
Resistive touch is still the leading technology in unit shipments, with 90 manufactures supplying it. Projected capacitive technology has attracted many suppliers - the number has almost doubled since last year to 56. The market research firm expects these two technologies to make up almost 98% of touch screen unit share in 2010 and will continue to dominate unit shipments, although by 2016 the share will drop to 82%.
Projected capacitive shipments have increased substantially, in large part thanks to being part of Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch since 2007. With the addition of the iPad and iPhone 4 in 2010 DisplaySearch forecasts projected capacitive touch will surpass resistive touch technology and become the leading touch technology on a revenue basis.
In-cell touch was commercialized in May 2009 and is experiencing high growth and penetration into large size displays. It's expected to achieve higher yield rates and show strong growth in 2011, and grow to more than $600 million by 2016.
On-cell projected capacitive touch, also commercialized in 2009, is showing good growth. Although the market research firm said yield rates remain a concern it forecast the segment to reach $1.7 billion by 2016.
The industry is diverse, with over a dozen touch screen technologies and about 200 suppliers. Some suppliers, such as Elo/Tyco Electronics and 3M, supply several touch technologies. Some suppliers only manufacture controller ICs (such as Atmel and Cypress) and other make complete modules, including the touch sensor and controller IC (such as Elo/Tyco Electronics and 3M).
