Swedish-based appliance maker Electrolux is gathering plastic debris from the ocean and will recycle the plastic to make a limited number of vacuum cleaners to help raise public awareness of the issue.

"Our oceans are filled with plastic waste. Yet on land, there is a shortage of recycled plastic," wrote Electrolux President and CEO Hans Stråberg for the Vac from the Sea web site. "The supply of sustainable raw material, such as recycled plastic, is crucial for making sustainable appliances."

He added that the program is intended to raise awareness of the threat that waste plastic poses to marine habitats, "and the urgent need for taking better care of the plastic that already exists," he said.
