The GeoSpring hybrid water heater from GE won first place in the Edison Best New Product Awards in the Lifestyle & Social impact category.
After air heating/cooling, water heating is the largest user of energy in the home. As homes have been designed to be more energy–efficient, the percentage of energy used to heat water has grown.
GE's hybrid water heater is designed to cut residential water heater energy costs by more than half. It uses heat pump technology (in combination with traditional electric elements) to pull heat from surrounding air and transfer it to the tank. The appliance produces the same amount of hot water as a traditional water heater but does so using up to 62% less energy per year.
The unit exceeds Energy Star water heater minimum requirements of 2.0 Energy Factor (EF) with a 2.35 EF rating.
GE used a DOE test procedure to compare the unit's 1856 kWh per year energy use to a 50-gallon standard electric tank water heater's use of 4881 kWh per year. The energy savings, based on a national average cost of 10.65 cents per kWh, means the GE hybrid unit could save a household $320 per year.
