Semi-finalists in the Electrolux 2010 Design Lab have designed a dishwasher in which robotic fish "eat" dishes clean and a robotic sheep vacuum that roams an interior space to graze on dirt and dust.
The Robotic Fish Dishwasher and the Instinct Vacuum Cleaner are two of the 25 finalists announced last week by Electrolux in its annual Design Lab competition for design students worldwide. The top 25 were chosen from a field of 1300 submissions. The top 25 concepts come from designers based in 17 countries around the world. Romania and China are represented by three entries each. The United States, India, Russia, and Australia have two representatives. For the first time the top 25 includes entries from the Middle East and India.
The 2010 competition had more than 1300 submissions, which was up 30% from 2009. The focus was on compact living. The 2010 competition brief asked industrial design students to consider how people will prepare and store food, wash clothes, and do dishes in the homes of 2050, when it is estimated that 74% of the global population will live in an urban environment.
Eight finalists will be announced by Electrolux in the week commencing 5th July. Those eight will be invited to present their concept to a jury of expert designers, which will consider entries based on intuitive design, innovation, and consumer insight. The first prize winner will get a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design center and 5,000 euros. A second prize of 3,000 euros and third prize of 2,000 euros are also on offer.
