iPad Shortage Prompting Apple to Seek New Display Source Jun 22, 2010

iPads are now estimated to be shipping at more than 1 million units per month and display supplier LG Display is having trouble keeping up with the ever-increasing demand for display components, prompting Apple to engage Samsung Electronics as a secondary supplier, according to theipadguide.com.

The iPad sports a 9.7-inch, LED-backlit IPS (in-plane switching) LCD display. The display offers 1024 x 768-pixel resolution at 132 pixels per inch and has an oil–resistant (oleophobic) coating to minimize fingerprints.

A shortage of the specialized display could be disastrous for Apple with shipments forecast by DigiTimes to grow significantly. By the end of 2010, shipments are forecast to reach 2.5 million units per month.

theipadguide.com estimates the display component costs $90 per unit, making it one if the costliest parts going into the $4999-and-up iPad.
