Apple unveiled the iPhone 4 on June 7, 2010, and recent history suggests it has the potential to be another milestone consumer product.
A standout feature on the new device is FaceTime, designed to make video calling a reality.
The device will also have the new Retina display, designed to be the highest resolution display in a phone. Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the display makes text look "like it does on a fine printed page." Indeed, Apple hopes users will use the unit for reading titles from its new electronic bookstore.
The 3.5-inch display has 960 x 640 pixels, for four times as many pixels as the iPhone 3GS and 78% of the pixels on an iPad. The company said that the display's 326 pixels-per-inch is so dense that the human eye is unable to distinguish individual pixels when the phone is held at a normal distance.
The device is also designed to be the thinnest smartphone ever at 9.3 mm. The front and back are made of aluminosilicate glass, chemically strengthened to be 30 times harder than plastic, with enhanced scratch resistance and durability. Front and back glass have an oil-resistant coating to help keep it clean and a highly finished band, made of a custom-alloyed stainless steel, circles the unit.
iPhone 4 also has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, the A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro, and talk time up to 40% longer.
The unit will be available in the United States, UK, France, Germany, and Japan on June 24, and will retail for as low as $199 in the U.S. for some buyers who sign a service contract.
