Suicides at Chinese Contract Manufacturer Spur Wage Increases

Numerous media outlets are reporting that contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Company will give raises of up to 20% to its Chinese workers after several customers, including Apple and Dell, said they plan independent investigations of the numerous suicides reported among the Hon Hai workforce.

Hon Hai's Foxconn manufacturing campus in Shenzhen, China, has seen a spate of employee suicides this year. The latest, according to Shanghaiist.com, reportedly occurred just hours after a media tour conducted on May 27 by Hon Hai CEO Terry Gou.
