April Crude Steel Production Up 35.7% May 25, 2010

World crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 122 million metric tons (mmt) in April, up 35.7% from April 2009.

• China produced more crude steel in April 2010 than ever before in a single month. China’s crude steel production for April 2010 was 55.4 mmt, an increase of 27% from April 2009.

• Japan's production: 9.0 mmt of crude steel in April 2010, up 56.7% over April 2009.

• South Korea’s production: 4.8 mmt, up 22.9%.

• Germany’s production: 3.9 mmt, up 107.2%.

• Italy's production: 2.4 mmt, up 57.9%.

• Spain's production: 1.6 mmt, up 36%,

• Russia’s production: 5.6 mmt, up 28.9%.

• Ukraine's production: 3.0 mmt, up 39%.

• Turkey's production: 2.4 mmt, up 21.5%.

• U.S. production: 6.8 mmt, up 79.4%.

• Brazilian production: 2.7 mmt, up 56.6% .

The world crude steel capacity utilization ratio of the 66 countries in April 2010 was 83.4%. Compared to April 2009, the utilization ratio in April 2010 increased by 18.9 percentage points.
