Global non-industrial motor demand was more than 8.7 billion units in 2009 according to an IMS Research report, which forecasts that number to grow to almost 11.5 billion units by 2013.

The non-industrial market is dominated by dc brush, dc brushless, and dc stepper motor types, collectively account for over 85% of the market, IMS reported. This market segment represents demand for goods linked to direct consumer consumption.

DC brush motors – the lowest cost motors, suitable for many applications – were estimated in the report to account for approximately 45% of total motor demand.

In spite of dc brush motors’ limitations in long-term operation and speed control, IMS forecast the market to continue to grow just above the market average for the period 2007 to 2013.

Highest growth is predicted for the more expensive dc brushless, offering better performance motor types and benefiting from ongoing price erosion.

The report estimates the market for power and processor-based semiconductors used in non-industrial motor control to be worth $17.5 billion in 2009. This report excludes additional component types - such as passive devices, optocomponents, and analog ICs – which means the total value of this semiconductor market could be as much as $30 billion.
