A new joint venture between battery makers FIAMM and Switzerland's MES-DEA will bring sodium-nickel-chloride batteries to North America. This storage technology is available immediately from FIAMM’s North American headquarters in Waynesboro, GA, U.S.

Benefits of the battery technology over existing energy storage solutions include increased capacity, longer lifecycle, zero emissions, low-cost raw materials, safety, and high energy density for reduced battery size and weight compared to lithium ion and lead acid batteries, according to Nicola Cosciani, FIAMM’s director of strategic development and now managing co-director of the new company, FZ Sonick.

Sonick sodium-nickel-chloride batteries are used often in large applications such as electric vehicles and wireless cell sites, but can also be applied in uninterruptible power supplies and wheelchairs.

There are very few suppliers of the technology, although a GE plant making the batteries is scheduled to open in mid-2011.

The new company will also market a variety of alternative energy storage solutions worldwide.
