March world crude steel production for the 66 countries reporting to the World Steel Association was 120 million metric tons (mmt), up 30.6% from March 2009.
In the first quarter of 2010:
• Asia produced 219 mmt of crude steel, up 27% over 1Q 2009
• the EU produced 42 mmt of crude steel, up 37%
• North America produced 27 mmt of crude steel, up 53.8%
March 2010 crude steel production:
• China: 55 mmt, up 22.5% on March 2009
• Japan: 9.3 mmt, up 62.8%
• India: 5.5 mmt, up 9.2%
• South Korea: 4.8 mmt, up 29.6%
Germany: 4.0 mmt, up 91.5%
Italy: 2.4 mmt, up 43.5%
Spain: 1.6 mmt, up 33%
Russia’s: 5.5 mmt, up 19.6% higher
Ukraine: 3.0 mmt, up 25.8%
Turkey: 2.2 mmt, up 19.7%
United States: 6.9 mmt, up 74.2%
Brazil: 2.8 mmt, up 63.4%
The association said the world crude steel capacity utilization ratio of the 66 countries in March 2010 was 80.2%, no change from February 2010. The utilization ratio in March 2010 increased by 15.3 percentage points over March 2009.
