303 Million Handsets Shipped in 1Q May 4, 2010

First quarter global handset shipments were 303 million units, up 19% compared to the first quarter of 2009 according to ABI Research.

"This bodes well for 2010 as a whole: shipments could well reach 1.3 billion,” said Jake Saunders, ABI vice president for forecasting. “It is also notable that 3G handset shipments eclipsed 2G handset shipments.”

The Middle East and Africa saw strong growth in phone handset shipments, which were up 20% year on year. The U.S. saw 11% growth. Europe saw only single-digit growth.

ABI said Nokia’s market-share was 34%, followed by:
• Samsung's 21%
• LG 8.9%
• Motorola 2.8%

Apple shipped 8.75 million units in the quarter, up 130% year-on-year, giving it 2.9% of the global market share.
