Dyson plans to double the number of engineers working for it in the UK from 350 to 700.

Dyson said that, against a backdrop of high unemployment and a declining manufacturing sector, this move is a strong indication that it believes in the future of Britain’s industry. Dyson said it is bucking the UK trend, and pointed to Office of National Statistics figures that show unemployment in the UK rose by 43,000 between December 2009 and February 2010, hitting a 15-year high of 2.5 million.

The new engineers will be hired for the company's head office in Malmesbury, where Dyson appliances are conceived, researched, and designed. The new positions include graduate design engineers, mechanical engineers, and project managers. About 150 engineering positions will be filled at once, with the intention of hiring a subsequent 150 engineers thereafter.

Dyson's appliances are well-known for their innovative engineering, and the company quadrupled its investment in R&D in the last 5 years. Dyson now has a specialist team of 50 engineers dedicated to developing its digital motors. The company filed 124 patents with the UK Patent Office in 2009 alone, making it second only to Rolls Royce.
