Fitness Devices Could Grow With Bluetooth Low Energy

Industry watchers believe Bluetooth low energy may help the fitness monitoring device market grow enough to take the industry "to the next level" according to IMS Research.

Filomena Berardi, author of the report "Wireless in Sports and Fitness Equipment," said the technology enabled by such devices would help change consumer behavioral attitudes toward the use of performance monitors and help make the devices more important to fitness routines.

Bluetooth low energy-enabled monitors will soon be able to connect to dual-mode (Bluetooth and Bluetooth low energy) mobile phones. IMS estimates more than 650 million Bluetooth-enabled handsets were shipped in 2009. Nokia is seen as leading the drive to incorporate low energy technology into phones but will likely be followed by other phone makers
