2009 was a record year for OLED technology, with revenues up 35% year-to-year to reach $826 million, according to DisplaySearch's Quarterly OLED Shipment and Forecast. Increased AMOLED demand for mobile phone main displays was the key driver of the growth in 2009.
The increased AMOLEDs demand in 2009 led to it overtaking PMOLED revenues for the first time, with $537 million in annual revenue compared to PMOLED's $291 million. DisplaySearch said PMOLED demand fell in 2009 as mobile phone design trends shifted from clam-shell designs, using PMOLEDs for secondary displays, to smart phones, using larger active matrix displays.
