Thoughtful, integrated design has the potential to ensure urbanization has a positive impact on the planet, according to 75 designers, architects, and planners surveyed by Electrolux at the Feb. 12, 2010, DesignBoost event in Stockholm.
Electrolux noted UN statistics indicating that 75% of the word's population will live in urban areas by 2050. 80% of survey respondents embrace urbanization as an opportunity to make the world a better place.
DesignBoost hosted more than 350 designers, architects, and other "global thinkers" at the Swedish Museum of Architecture for a series of seminars and workshops addressing the theme "Space for Life." Among the issues discussed: design's role in ensuring that the opportunities rising from increased urbanization can be maximized.
“Urbanization, if managed correctly, can be a force for good, facilitating sensible energy consumption, minimizing infrastructural impact and allowing communities to grow together,” said Henrik Otto, senior vice president for Design at Electrolux.
