The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI) released its November 2009 heating and cooling equipment data. Shipments were up for almost all categories compared to one year ago, although year-to-date shipments were still down.
As shown in the graph, the number of residential gas water heaters increased 20 percent, to 313,524 units in November 2009, up from 260,443 units in November 2008. In the same time period, the number of residential electric water heaters increased 4 percent, to 290,691 units, up from 280,019 units in November 2008.
However, residential gas and electric water heater year-to-date shipments were both down from one year ago. The year-to-date residential gas water heater shipments for November 2009 totaled 3,403,025, down 6.7% from 3,646,711 year-to-date shipments in November 2008. The number of residential electric water heater shipments was down 11.6% compared to year-to-date shipments for November 2008.
Commercial gas water heaters posted a 16-percent increase in shipments for the month, from 4,910 units in November 2008 up to 5,691 units in November 2009. Shipments of commercial electric water heaters, however, dropped 10 percent in November 2009 to 3,864 units, compared to 4,292 units in November 2008.
The year-to-date commercial gas water heater shipments for November 2009 totaled 69,208, down 15.7% from 82,083 year-to-date shipments in November 2008. The number of commercial electric water heater shipments was down 19.2% compared to year-to-date shipments for November 2008.
November brought gains for both gas warm-air furnaces and oil warm-air furnaces. Gas warm-air furnaces had a gain of 15 percent in shipments, to 231,108 units, up from 200,502 units shipped in 2008. Oil warm-air furnaces shipments increased 55 percent to 7,704 units, up from 4,979 units shipped in November 2008.
The year-to-date gas warm-air furnace shipments for November 2009 totaled 1,940,077, down 7.7% from 2,100,821 year-to-date shipments in November 2008. However, the number of oil warm-air furnace shipments was only down 2.2% compared to year-to-date shipments for November 2008.
The total number of U.S. factory shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps in November 2009 was 283,360 units, 100,816 of which were heat pumps. This is an increase over November 2008, when factory shipments of central air-conditioners and air-source heat pumps were 231,995 units, 95,506 of which were heat pumps.
