Whirlpool to Keep R&D Center in Indiana Oct 2, 2009

Whirlpool Corp., which last month announced plans to shutter its Evansville, IN, U.S. manufacturing facility, has decided to retain a refrigeration products research and development center in the Southern Indiana city, said a Business First report.

About 275 people are employed at the center, said the report.

The closing of the manufacturing plant, which is expected to happen by mid-2010, is expected to lead to the elimination of about 1100 full-time jobs. Top-freezer refrigerators now being made in Evansville will be made at another Whirlpool plant in Mexico. Production of icemakers now made in Evansville will be relocated to a site yet to be determined.

The report said that the Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Whirlpool US$50,000 in training grants and will allow the company to retain $1.1 million in previously awarded tax credits, in exchange for keeping the center open.
