U.S. Consumer Confidence Index Increases More than Expected

Confidence among U.S. consumers rose more than forecast in September, said the University of Michigan preliminary index of consumer sentiment. The Index increased to 70.2 this month from 65.7 in August. It was forecast to rise to 67.5.

The University of Michigan measure of current conditions, which reflects Americans’ perceptions of their financial situation and whether it is a good time to buy big-ticket items like cars and homes, rose to 71.8 from 66.6.The index of consumer expectations for six months from now, which more closely projects the direction of consumer spending, increased to 69.2 from 65 in August.
