AC, Heat Pump Shipments up in July

Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air-conditioners and air-source heat pumps for July 2008 totaled 677,097, up 6.2% compared with the same month a year ago, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). For the year-to-date, combined shipments totaled 4,072,507, a 3.8% drop compared with the same period last year.

Heat pump shipments for July totaled 198,686, up 17.3% from the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, heat pump shipments totaled 1,257,300, a 2.5% jump compared with the same period last year.

However, U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in July dropped 6%, and totaling 187,049 a 6% drop compared with the same month a year ago. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 2750, a 52% drop compared with July 2007 totals. For the year-to-date, gas furnace shipments totaled 1.2 million, a 16% drop compared with the same period last year. Oil furnace shipments for the year-to-date totaled 26,296, a 30% drop compared with the same period last year, AHRI said.

Residential electric water heater shipments for July totaled 348,383, a 7% jump from the same month a year ago. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 301,219, a 0.7% drop compared with shipments for the same month last year. For the year-to-date, AHRI said that about 5 million residential gas and electric storage water heaters have been shipped, a 3% drop compared with the same period a year ago.

Commercial gas water heater shipments for July totaled 6,383, jumping 13% compared with the same month last year, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 5497, also jumping 13% compared with the same month a year ago.

For the year-to-date, electric water heater shipments (41,523) are 8.5% ahead of total shipments of this product during the same period last year (38,262). Commercial gas water heater shipments (55,055) for the year-to-date are up 4%, compared with the same period a year ago (52,719).

A total of 41,008 vent-free room heaters were shipped in July 2008, AHRI said, a 6% increase compared with the same month last year. For the year-to-date, 80,168 units have been shipped, a 14%drop compared with the same period last year (93,381).

July gas logs and insert product shipments totaled 26,120, a 4% jump compared with the same month last year. Gas fireplace shipments for July 2008 totaled 4639, a 9% drop compared to the same month last year.
