Worldwide personal-computer shipments fell 8.1% in the first quarter, according to research firm iSuppli Corp. Shipments totaled 65 million units. The desktop segment experienced the largest decline, with 1Q shipments falling 23% compared to the same period in 2008. Notebook shipments, however, grew 10% compared to the same period last year.
Hewlett-Packer remained the number one manufacturer for the 11th consecutive quarter, with its shipments remaining flat at 13 million units. It had a 19.7% market share.
Dell had an 18.7% drop in shipments, totaling 8.8 million units for the quarter. Its market share fell to 13.2% from 14.9%.
The remainder of the top 5 included Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba, which had market shares of 11.1%, 6.7%, and 5.2%, respectively.
