April Steel Shipments Down 57% Jun 18, 2009

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that for the month of April 2009, U.S. steel mills shipped 4,042,000 net tons, a 57% decrease from the 9,403,000 net tons shipped in April 2008 and a 2.3% decrease from the 4,138,000 net tons shipped in the previous month, March 2009.

A year-to-year comparison of year-to-date shipments shows that service centers and distributors were down 56.2%; construction and contractors’ products were down 55%; and oil and gas was down 54.9%.
