Production of raw steel in the United States for the week ending May 30, 2009, was 1,103,000 net tons, while the capability utilization rate was 46.2%, said the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Production was 2,173,000 tons in the week ending May 30, 2008, while the capability utilization then was 91.1%. The current week production represents a 49.3% decrease from the same period in the previous year, AISI said.
Adjusted year-to-date production through May 30,2009 was 21,961,000 tons, at a capability utilization rate of 43%, said AISI, which is a 52.6% decrease from the 46,297,000 tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 90.6%.
