The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute says U.S. vent-free product manufacturers may soon be getting a call from the Department of Energy. The DOE is collecting information about standby energy use in vent-free products. The information it collects will be used to determine if it needs to amend its test procedure for direct heating equipment.
AHRI submitted comments to DOE explaining that most of the standby power for these products is used by the oxygen depletion safety shutoff system (ODS), which is a critical safety device required on all gas-fired unvented heaters. In addition to being an important safety feature, the ODS pilot system generates heat, which helps warm the space, reducing the heaters’ overall energy use.
