The Ethisphere Institute released its 2009 list of the World's Most Ethical Companies. OEMs on the list included a number of global appliance OEMs:
  • Johnson Controls (HVAC)
  • General Electric (major appliances and HVAC)
  • John Deere (outdoor power equipment)
  • Royal Philips (personal care/healthcare appliances and consumer electronics)
There were also a number of computer and business equipment makers:
  • Dell
  • Hewlett-Packard
  • Ricoh Company
  • Xerox
Industry Suppliers on the list include:
  • Freescale Semiconductor
  • Henkel
  • Honeywell International
  • Intel

Appliance retailers include:

  • Target
Companies can submit themselves for consideration for the Most Ethical Companies list. A methodology committee is formed, consisting of attorneys, professors, government officials, and organization leaders to assist Ethisphere in creating the scoring methodology. A semi-finalist list is created from company applications as well as from information Ethisphere gathers throughout the year. Semi-finalist companies are notified and fill out an in-depth survey questionnaire to fill out regarding their ethics and compliance program, governance, and corporate responsibility. These documents, as well as documents and information researched and requested by Ethisphere to confirm survey responses, help develop an EQ score based on the results and measured against seven distinct categories. These categories, and their weight in determining a final score, are:
  • Corporate citizenship and responsibility: 20%
  • Corporate governance: 10%
  • Innovation that contributes to public well being: 15%
  • Industry leadership: 5%
  • Executive leadership and tone from the top: 15%
  • Legal, regulatory and reputation track record: 20%
  • Internal systems and ethics/compliance program: 15%
The highest EQ scores for each industry became this year’s 2009 World’s Most Ethical Companies.

The research-based Ethisphere Institute is a leading international think-tank dedicated to the creation, advancement and sharing of best practices in business ethics, corporate social responsibility, anti-corruption and sustainability.
