Combined U.S. factory shipments of central air-conditioners and air-source heat pumps for February totaled 267,444, down 21% compared with the same month a year ago, according to the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). For the year-to-date, combined shipments totaled 489,863, down 27% compared with the same period last year. View charts.
Heat pump shipments for February totaled 104,260 down 18% from the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, heat pump shipments totaled 195,620, a 23% drop compared with the same period last year.
U.S. factory shipments of gas-fired, warm-air furnaces in February totaled 123,629, a 20% drop compared with the same month a year ago, AHRI said. Oil-fired, warm-air furnaces for the same month totaled 3,494, a 5.4% drop compared with February 2008 totals. For the year-to-date, gas furnace shipments totaled 257,999, a 21.2% drop compared with the same period last year. Oil furnace shipments for the year-to-date totaled 6810, a 28.5% drop compared with the same period last year.
Residential electric water heater shipments for February totaled 321,055, an 11.2% drop from the same month a year ago, AHRI said. Residential gas water heater shipments totaled 327,591, a 6.4% decrease compared with shipments for the same month last year. For the year-to-date, about 643,452 residential gas water heaters have been shipped, a 4% drop compared with the same period a year ago. For the year-to-date, about 634,232 residential electric storage water heaters have been shipped, a 9.4% drop compared to the same period last year.
Commercial gas water heater shipments for February totaled 7214, dropping 6.3% compared with the same month last year, while commercial electric water heater shipments totaled 4520, a 16.6% drop compared with the same month a year ago. For the year-to-date, commercial electric water heater shipments (9291) are 12.2% behind total shipments of this product during the same period last year (10,586). Commercial gas water heater shipments (13,230) for the year-to-date are down 11.2%, compared with the same period a year ago (14,893).
