The Air Movement and Control Association International, Inc. (AMCA) said its Certified Rating Program (CRP) received Energy Star approval from the U.S. Department of Energy and Environmental Protection Agency. According to AMCA, the Energy Star rating resulted in a revision of the program requirements for residential ventilating fans, including revised testing requirements and partners, which AMCA says allows increased flexibility where manufacturer’s can test their products for Energy Star qualification, including AMCA’s testing laboratory at the AMCA headquarters. AMCA Certified Ratings Program participants are eligible to qualify for the Energy Star program. The Energy Star ventilating fan program for residential ventilating fans applies to range hoods (up to 500 cfm), bathroom and utility room fans (from 10 to 500 cfm), and in-line single-port and multi-ort ventilating fans. Products excluded from the specification include residential ventilating fans used for cooling or air circulation (such as whole house fans), heat/energy recovery ventilation fans ducted to the ventilated space, powered attic ventilators, residential ventilating fans with heat lamps and passive ventilation of any kind. The revised program went into effect on Jan. 15, 2009. AMCA says the new requirements in the program do not grant exclusive rights to any organization to certify, verify, or challenge test Energy Star qualified products or products applying for Energy Star qualification. Additional specifics of the program require that an organization must: • Provide laboratory verification testing • Provide defined challenge testing requirements • Provide product rating limits • Provide availability of the certification organization’s procedures • Share results with the EPA • Perform the testing in an independent, third party laboratory that is ISO 17025 accredited.
