Demand for industrial control equipment continued to slide during the fourth quarter, as sales dropped 6.1% compared to the prior quarter, according to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). On a year-over-year basis, NEMA said the index posted its first measurable decline since 2003 and its largest contraction since 1Q 2002. Conditions were similarly weak for the broader measure of demand for industrial controls, the Primary Industrial Controls and Adjustable Speed Drives index, which fell 6.7% compared to 3Q 2008 and nearly 11% versus the same period a year ago.
NEMA predicts that shipments of industrial controls and other types of capital equipment likely will continue to decline over the next few quarters.
