BSH CEO says Energy-Efficient Appliances are the Future

Dr. Kurt-Ludwig Gutberlet, chairman of the Board of Management of BSH Bosch und Siemens Hausgeräte GmbH, called on the audience of International Consumer Electronics Fair (IFA) in Berlin to work together to encourage consumers to purchase energy-efficient appliances. He said, "Together, we – the manufacturers, the trade and the politicians – can make a substantial contribution to achieving this major goal."

Dr. Gutberlet said BSH has systematically reduced its appliances' energy and water consumption levels since the first oil crisis back in the 1970s. He said that BSH was the first major manufacturer in the world to eliminate CFCs and FCs from its cooling appliances and has long since pursued a policy of introducing energy-efficient appliances in the emerging markets.

"This is reflected in our consistently successful business performance", Dr. Gutberlet said. "Our appliances on sale across Europe, in virtually every product category, are superior to the rest of the market in terms of their energy efficiency and their impact on the climate."

Dr. Gutberlet noted that appeals to people's consciences alone are not enough to persuade consumers to purchase more efficient, but also more expensive appliances. Many consumers are still not aware, he said, that the money they would save from the enhanced efficiency of these appliances often cancels out the higher price tag within just a few years.

"Households have very few possibilities of defending themselves against rising energy prices, but investing a modest amount in energy-efficient appliances is one such possibility," Gutberlet stated.

For more efficient household appliances to help achieve "this major goal" of becoming more sparing in our consumption of natural resources, Gutberlet recommended:

1. An informative, dynamic and new energy labeling scheme that more clearly indicates each appliance's energy-saving potential.

2. Government incentives such as those already in place in Spain and Italy that can offer consumers an additional incentive to purchase highly efficient appliances

3. Better and more comprehensive consumer advice and information from manufacturers, the retail trade, and politicians. "Energy-saving is not a short-lived fad, but a genuinely long-term megatrend", said Dr. Gutberlet. "We are on the threshold of a major economic shift – perhaps even of a 'third industrial revolution'. We at BSH are determined to actively contribute towards making the necessary changes."
