Kelly Romano, president of Carrier’s Building Systems and Services business unit, presented the business case for greening buildings during the opening of the "20-Now" Action Forum organized by the Energy Efficiency Partnership of Greater Washington (EEPGW).
She spoke about the importance of sustainable design and energy efficiency to more than 100 Washington, D.C.-area building owners, financers, property developers, architects and policymakers. Quoting current energy use statistics and estimated future demands, she urged the audience to join the movement toward energy conservation. "Instead of buildings that burn artificial lights all day and are lit up all night while empty offices are being cooled, buildings should be vibrant with natural lighting during the day and smart enough to go dark and use less cooling at night when there is little or no occupancy," said Romano.
She supported the importance of a market shift toward energy-efficient buildings by sharing examples of Carrier’s leadership in developing solutions for sustainable growth.
"Carrier addressed the environmental effect of products well in advance of regulatory timetables when we pioneered the global phase-out of chlorofluorocarbons in 1994 and introduced Puron, a non-ozone depleting refrigerant, into air-conditioning systems in 1996," she stated. "We are committed to leading the transition away from hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) to further promote ozone preservation."
Bill Sisson, director of Sustainability for United Technologies Research Center, also participated in the forum via a panel discussion on "How Markets and Policy are Driving Energy Efficiency in Buildings." Back
