Robert F. Fox, Jr., AIA, partner of Cook + Fox Architects opened the final day of the 10th Global Engineering Conference at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas with his presentation, "High Performance Design: A Passion for the Possible." The three-day conference on new building sustainable design and construction was sponsored by Carrier Corp., a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Fox told the audience, "it is an imperative to find different ways to transmit energy, as 66 percent of power from the grid is lost as heat, another 7 percent is lost in transmission, leaving only 27 percent as usable energy."

Alex Steffen, co-founder and executive editor of Worldchanging, a widely read sustainability-related online publication (http://www.worldchanging.com), provided the luncheon address on "Sustainable Cities, Bright Green Lives." Steffen focused his message around the need to re-think how people live in cities and urban areas, stating, "We find ourselves facing two futures, one unthinkable and the other currently unimaginable."

More than a dozen engineering industry experts presented throughout the day including David M. Ade, LEED® AP, principal of SMP Architects in Philadelphia, and Robert Bean, Registered Engineering Technologist (R.E.T.) of Building Technologies and Industry Development in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

In his presentation, "A Truly Sustainable Fit: Appropriate Green Design for Diverse Scopes, Programs and Budgets" Ade discussed sustainability as a holistic design process and claimed that any project can and should be sustainable. Bean’s presentation, "HVAC Systems Targeted Toward an Aging Population" involved the interdisciplinary relationships between interior designers, industrial designers, HVAC engineers, architects and health care professionals.

Workshop sessions continue this afternoon with presentations on the newest green building and sustainable design principles and strategies, the environmental impact of industry standards, economic trends and global sustainability. An optional LEED® seminar, "Energy Modeling for Sustainable Design," will be conducted following the conference led by Thomas J. Kelly, LEED® AP and Robert Feduik, P.E., LEED® AP, both of Carrier Corp. in Syracuse, N.Y.

Carrier University will provide continuing education units (CEU) for Global Engineering Conference attendees who participate in workshop sessions and complete a learning assessment. For more information, visit www.globalengineeringconference.com.

The Global Engineering Conference started in 1992 in Washington, D.C. A global audience of nearly 700 attendees from 19 countries and 42 states attended the 2008 conference.
